Admissions Process

What are the characteristics of a competitive applicant?
UConn Admissions counselors perform a holistic review of every student’s application, incorporating standardized test scores, rigor of academic curricula, classroom performance, extracurricular activities, and community involvement.  Competitive applicants generally have a B+ cumulative grade point average (3.3 on a 4.0 scale), are ranked in the top 25% of their high school class, and have performed favorably on standardized tests.  Admissions requirements are detailed on the Application Information section of our web site.

How will AP/IB scores be applied to my student record?
Based upon the scores you receive, AP/IB credits will be applied to your student record after you are offered admission to the University. Please see the AP guidelines and IB guidelines websites for more information.

What kinds of classes should I take in high school?
Competitive applicants enroll in rigorous programs of study and college preparatory work that extends beyond the minimum academic requirements of their high school. 

Though not required, honors, Advanced Placement, and Early College Experience courses are viewed favorably by Admissions counselors.

What are the essay questions?
Essay questions are detailed on the Undergraduate Application details page

Do you interview applicants for admission?
Interviews are not required, and do not affect a student’s admission decision.

What does Early Action mean?
Students who apply online and submit all application materials by December 1 are automatically considered for Early Action.  Early action applicants will receive notification of their candidacy by early February.  Early Action admission offers do not require the student to enroll at the University. How do I apply for a Combined Special Program in Medicine, Dental Medicine, or Law?
Students interested in these programs are required to submit a supplemental application for the respective program, in addition to the University’s Application for Undergraduate Admission.   More information, including the supplemental application, can be found on the Special Programs section of the Admissions web site.

Where can I find information about campus tours?
The Lodewick Visitors Center offers campus tours throughout the year.  Please visit the Center's web site for more information.  A virtual tour of the Storrs campus is also available.

Does Admissions offer the opportunity to meet with UConn students?
UConn offers many opportunities to interact with current UConn students.  Sample life at UConn in our Husky-for-a-Day program. You’ll attend classes, meet current students, visit a residence hall and learn more about the top public university in New England.   Please see the Visitors Center web site for more information and to sign up.

What is the average class size at UConn?
The majority of UConn’s classes have fewer than 30 students.

Are study abroad opportunities available? 
More than 18% of UConn students study abroad in more than 200 programs in 65 countries.  More information is available at the Study Abroad Programs office web site.

 

University Life

Are all incoming students guaranteed housing?
All incoming students are guaranteed housing at the Storrs campus.  UConn has the highest percentage of students living on campus of any public university in the nation.

Is parking available for freshmen?
Students living in on-campus must have at least 54 credits to qualify for a University parking permit.  For more information, please see the Parking Services web site.

Financial Aid

When does the FAFSA need to be completed?
Students should file a FAFSA online at the FAFSA website after January 1st, but before March 1st to meet UConn’s “on-time” deadline. Questions should be directed to the U.S. Department of Education at 1-800-433-3243.
