UConn’s School of Social Work in Hartford prepares students for a rewarding career in a wide range of community-based service organizations on the state, national, and international level. Our Bachelor’s of Social Work (BSW) degree gives students the foundation they need to advance human well-being, human rights, and social justice issues through innovative social work education and practice.

As a BSW student you will:

  • Have the opportunity to learn from dedicated social work faculty and staff as well as your fellow students
  • Engage in hands-on learning by working with clients during your field internship
  • Engage in critical thinking and dialogue to develop and enhance the understanding of your own perspective and that of others
  • Analyze social problems through a social justice framework and learn skills to make multi-level change

This process will make you a strong advocate for the people you will serve.

Combine specialized coursework with real-world experience in field internships in a number of areas including child welfare, mental health, substance abuse, healthcare, aging, immigration, political advocacy, food assistance programs, and more.

Social work is an exciting career that is both challenging and rewarding. By pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work degree, graduates have the opportunity to pursue a Masters in Social Work in an accelerated program–advanced standing. Graduates can apply for advanced-standing admission for UConn’s Master of Social Work program, allowing them to complete their graduate degree in one year.
